I have a 500GB hard drive witch I use for my time machine and I have split in 2 250GB for me and 250GB for my wife's MacBook air. How do I make it back into the full 500GB again? Thanks for your help

Disk utility will do it but I think you must erase it all and start backup again, or use it for something else.

Right click on the drive in Disk Utility and then select Erase and a format. I use Mac OS Extended (case-sensitive, journaled, encrypted). You can create a new Time Machine backup after it formats.
