Is anybody else worried that all this changing of plans to non iPhone plans might ruin requirements to upgrade to a new iPhone if they are released?

No because your upgrade eligibility has nothing to do with the periphery plans you have. It will be based on the date of activation.

But last time didnt they give a slight pardon to those who had purchased the previous iphone???? I dont think changing your messaging plan would constitute u not being eligible for an upgrade when iphone 3.0 comes out. i think mot of us(i know i did) still kept the iphone data plan. it actually didnt even offer me the option to change my data plan even tho the OLAM showed i was using a Tilt. But yea popping your sim out and going to medianet on a capable phone seems to do the trick everytime if u had mms working before. it mut trick the system again until they do their sweep

That was my point, if they allow you to upgrade early for the new iPhone...the requirements will be you would have to have had an iPhone 3G activated on the network by a certain date, most likely a a fair bit before the new iPhone was announced/released.

One thing is that (quote from an AT&T Retail Rep) "iPhone 3G users who have bought the iPhone 3G at the subsidized price, will NOT be able to upgrade earlier than the 2 year contract date (or 21 months)" he also said that, "dont bank on there being a new iPhone because we knew 4-6 months ahead of time about the iPhone 3G, and weve heard nothing about a new iPhone"

2 reasons why I do not think they will allow the same type of early upgrade there was from the original iPhone.

    1. The original iPhone was not subsidized, the 3g was. There is no reason for AT&T to allow you a second subsidized phone prior to your upgrade time.
    2. The rumored "trade in" program AT&T might be launching in June. Basically they will give you 50-200 bucks ffor your current iPhone 3g towards the unsubsidized price of the new iPhone.
However, I do think they will do the exception upgrade like they do with the 3G, basically add 200 bucks to the subsidized price. Of course there will be restrictions their too; Account in good standing, can't have had an upgrade in the previous 6 months, probably others.

That would really suck if they didnt offer current iphone users a chance to get it at the subsidized price. it wouldnt surprise me but it certainly would suck.

your first reason doesn't make sense to me. I had bought a subsidized blackjack a month before i bought my unsubsidized iphone V1, so i was in a 2 year commitment, then the iphone 3G came out 6 months later, i was able to upgrade to the 3G for the subsidized 199 price. So i bout two subsidized phones in 7 months. AT&T's reasons for allowing iphone users to upgrade early can't be only based on the V1 being unsubsidized

boy has this thread taken an unexpected twist!!!!! lol. Well back on topic i lost my MMS for a hot second. then i did the airplane mode trick and that got me going again. Its almost comical how many different things u have to do to keep it going. When att doesnt want u to have something they really dont want u to have it. Geeezzz

As i've said before that's just the way the system is set up. They have to change it. They ate getting all the iPhone provision and tech tools set up first. But if you have it working dint screw with anything cause its very sensitive lol

Well, it's almost been confirmed that there will be a new iPhone this summer, and ATT tells me that I'm eligible for an upgrade after 12 months. ATT reps/support never know anything till the last minute, that's been confirmed as well.
