Default Thank You system

I've temporarily disabled the Thank You system. While good in theory, I'm concerned by the level of misuse of the system that depletes it's value.

Thoughts, issues....

BTW, all the data remains... it's just turned off for now.

Any chance of limiting it as I mentioned elsewhere? Like to 3 or 5 thanks per user per day? If not, I suppose it was fun while it lasted. It's a shame people can't be responsible with such a harmless tool.

I agree. If people could just use it for helpful posts, then it would be fine. I remember when I first joined, the people with the most thanks were always the more helpful ones in terms of iPhone news. Now that is not necesarilly the case.

While i agree that the system was certainly abused - many users saw the data as a way to compare themselves to others - I think it was a good system in the sense of being able to contribute something to those users who really did post something that helped you out. I don't know, but it feels nice to me to give something back.

Rep failed, thanks failed. What else do we have?

I hate to see it go and don't know what a good solution is, but it has definitely been losing it's meaning the last couple months. I always give some thought before I hit the thanks button to ensure the post is really a helpful one and not just something I happen to agree with. And yes, I have gotten a few that probably weren't warranted.
Maybe giving it a rest for a while isn't a bad thing.

It was a little icon next to the report button on each post. It was an epic failure compared to the thanks. I think "Thanks" is a good system. While abused, people are smart enough to spot those whom are actually helpful.

I knew it was doomed when I saw it being used in the Off Topic forum. It became more of a popularity thing for certain people that never post anything about the iphone.
