Exactly. When all said and done, at the end of the day you do know the helpful ones. And let's face it, how many times have you seen a post that clearly should have gotten a thanks but didn't? I would call it more of a fun system. If it is reinstated there will still be worthless thanks thrown out but as you say we know the helpful people and they are the ones who will ultimately gain the respect.

That's true. I started to thank people who posted helpful info but didn't receive thanks. Hence my 220+ thanks to 110 received.

Thoughts, issues....

BTW, all the data remains... it's just turned off for now.

I like the Thanks system and would like to see it return.

There is a common response by those in control (government or any control) to prohibit activity that causes issues or is being abused The better solution IMHO is to reprimand and educate those that abuse it.

I like this suggestion, and the general idea of keeping thanks, but finding ways to control it / keep it used as intended as far as possible ...

I can live with whatever is better for the forum as a whole, and I do not think it is worth arguing about. I like to help people when I am knowledgeable enough so I will continue to do so. Sometimes I would use thanks instead of quoting a post and replying with the text "thanks." (Especially when I was on EDGE on the iphone and the reply takes a while to type and send).

Okay, just updated the system and put some controls in place. Let me know if this sounds good.
  • Poster must have a minimum of 25 posts here at EIC before they can utilize the system.
  • Maximum of 5 "Thank You's" per day

This should curtail members who abuse the system and still keep the general concept of "rewarding" those who make valid contributions. It also cuts down post counts, when a simply "Thank you" will do.

I think that sounds good.

And as Lisa and you have both said, it does cut down on some posts when a simple thanks will do ...

to be honest, i wouldn't mind not having it at all. I think it's clear enough who the credible, helpful people are.

it's not like we can't help people just to be nice.

if we do keep it, i think it would also be a good idea to disable the thanks in the off-topic section.
