The new beta of IM+ (paid) for the iPhone supports push and includes the standard IM services as well as IRC and Twitter. 1 app that will replace 3; Rooms, Tweetie and Beejive. I hope to get it today from the developer.

I've been trying to get IRC running with Backgrounder on my jailbreak, and having no luck with Rooms or Colloquy (both return to blank screens of some sort after exiting the app). Last night I found a free app called IRChon that works amazingly with Backgrounder.

I've been putting it through its paces and I can't make this thing drop connection. I can even leave the phone locked for long periods of time and it doesn't drop. I can even toggle wifi on and off and it doesn't drop! Usually IRC connections drop at the sign of a stiff breeze, so this is pretty cool in my book.

Oh, it does audio alerts as well, and they work great in the background.

I just wish there was a paid option to kill the ads, but otherwise, it's definitely worth checking out.

The latest update to Backgrounder fixed the problem with returning to Colloquy and losing previous conversations, I believe.

I too am using IRCHon with backgrounder and it works flawlessly, im very impressed.
