You can share calendars with the google calendar as well as have it/them sync, along with contacts, to the iPhone.

YMMV

Straight from Apple's site describing a family pack:
A Family Pack subscription includes one Individual account with 20GB of combined email and file storage, plus four Family Member accounts, each with its own email address and 5GB of storage. Convert an Individual account to a Family Pack anytime you like — you just pay the difference.
This sounds like it would be what you need. Otherwise, an individual account would only give you one email account to share (though you could create multiple aliases for that single account, but they would all still go to the same inbox). The family pack will allow you and your wife to each have your own email accounts and online storage.

On the calendar sharing, are you on a Mac or PC?
