tech needs someone to take care of ipod touch

I’m a tech, sad to say. I'm required to have an iPod touch or similar handheld for work (we get our work tickets through them while out on jobs). This 8gb 2G was actually a gift from our boss and I don't want to tell him I jacked it up if I don't have to. It is my responsibility to repair it if needed and I don't want to catch any slack about not fixing it myself. My ego is already bruised right now because my repair attempt went south.

Being a chick in this company is hard at times, but I'm not usually too proud to ask for help, but things are tense right now! My mother just died and I apparently don't have the patience or steadiness for small, delicate devices.

Here's what happened: Started replacing the cracked screen (fell off the hospital bed where I lef it for Mom)... became anxious and shaky while installing and tore the connector ribbon. The original screen was trashed during removal. Ugh! Not my month!

I could order another and start over, but I can't handle messing it up again. I just want to go back to work and try to resume some normalcy - and obviously stay clear of delicate hardware repairs in the future (at least it was mine! i swear i'd be more careful with YOUR stuff )

Anybody out there do this cheap? I have a coworker who would do it free, but he’s out of the country and I have no contact info. I really can't wait until August when he returns.

Sorry. I know I wouldn't enjoy this sob story from a client – I’m just really out of sorts right now, please bare with me! I'm a blubbering mess these days! TMI! TMI! TMI! (shut up now gwen! only boring people ramble...)

    Thanks for your time!

Gwen, I would be very tempted to go in debt if needed and just get a new one. Fast, easy fix, and no embarrassment.

I AM very tempted to buy a new one. Been shopping around today. Yikes! I like it better when the boss bought it!

Wow, didn't want to make you feel bad for quitting a frustrating business. The sympathy, I have to admit, I needed.

Now, ha ha, I'm the one who feels guilty. I'm in a better state today and I'm going to give it another try. Your reply was incredibly kind. I didn't expect it from a forum! I really like this place.... after awhile you get used to the short-nasty replies on various boards.

I will definitely be in touch if I goof up again. Thanks so much for your wonderfully generous offer, I won't forget it! I now remember how cool techie people can be, and why I embraced this line of work! Now I'm going to act like a big girl and take care of the problem! [even if it eventually means buying a new iPod, ]

    Cost of parts...

I know you were asking Redon, but I can get parts for this repair for around $20, sometimes less if I'm lucky. Apple wants something like $199 for part and labor (last time I checked).

This was my first attempt on the 2G and I should have prepared a little (or a lot) better. Lesson learned.... the hard way!

FYI: replacing the 2G screen is NOT FUN! Right Redon?

I should keep tweaking my skills, for the $$. Of course sometimes making/saving money isn't worth the hassle, no matter how strapped you are for cash!

I'm impressed with this forum. Thanks for all the responses here and privately.

I don't envy anyone attempting a V1 screen replacement. You've impressed me for even trying, Gwen.
