yeah, i figure compressed all that mechanical work into such a tight space, the superdrive will probably make a few snap,crackle,pops as a cd gets 'mounted'
as for the iso, i havent tried again, but plan to do so today... we'll see... the 'hourglass' was the beachball spinner thing... never thought i'd ever see it lol...

are normal for slot-loaded superdrives... at least in the MBPs.
i don't see any reason why you would have problems mounting or copy/pasting an iso... if you continue to have problems, you could try mounting the iso straight from your friend's flash drive.
anyway, what "hourglass" are you talking about? If something is freezing, you usually get a spinning beachball-looking thing... or if things are REALLY bad a kernal panic, which will prompt you to power off your computer. I've actually run into this problem continually using handbrake (especially if i am multitasking while ripping a DVD).
