...so i have this crazy idea. I know it's possible to install Linux on a PS3, and i know it's possible to connect to a Time Capsule to stream media in Linux... so, theoretically, it should be possible to install linux on a PS3 and stream media with it.
Yeah I'm sure it's not squared away on the Mac side yet, but I remember when setting up Orb for PC, there were options for streaming to PS3 and Xbox. I don't know what exactly it entails, though.
well, that was four hours ago, so i think you can guess how it went.
just about any useful software is not developed for powerPC systems anymore (which the ps3 is), so everything i was researching to connect to my time capsule does not work... nor does anything else cool (not even flash player). So i can't even do something as simple as surf YouTube or listen to Pandora. Handbrake should technically work (which would be awesome for ripping blurays), but i wasn't able to compile the source code for some reason...
I've spent most of this time just trying to get it to display right on my TV...
and the system is much less capable than i thought it would be (as of now there is no access to the GPU), so i don't think it would handle high-res videos all that well anyway. It can barely run Firefox 3.
so in the end, it's just way too much work for my intermediate-level linux skills. Oh well, it was worth a shot, i guess. Now i can get a Mac mini with a clean conscience.
