And after syncing the iphone, all the info went to the iphone as planned. But then I saw that a recent appointment i entered into the iphone calendar didn't show up in ical. So I checked itunes and saw that my calendar syncing was not checked. So i checked it on, and synced.

Next thing i know, most of the info in ical disappeared. All the holiday calendars and most appointments. The only calendar left there is a nearly empty entourage calendar.

The iphone still has all the info, but now i am afraid to do anything.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is and how i can proceed without losing years of important calendar data?

Grateful for any sound advices!
Try this-

You have to have "Back to Mac" set to on.
System Preferences
Internet and Network
Mobile Me-Back to My Mac set to on.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am running Tiger and it has .mac instead of MobileMe, and no 'Back to my Mac' option. However, I may have solved the issue thru a combination of settings in Mobileme, iTunes, iSync, and Entourage's Sync preferences. I nearly had a disaster, now averted. But do you think I can remember exactly what I did to fix it? No way, Jose.

What do you mean by does not register? That you cannot see where to chose it in iTunes when you sync?

Default sync to iCal issue

What about this - I have a new 3G iPhone I'm trying to sync to iCal and I'm having two sort of similar problems:

1) When I sync from iTunes, the info I've put into the calendar in the iPhone does not show up in iCal on the computer.

2) The colors I use to differntiate one calendar from another do not transfer from iCal to iPhone - they are set up as sepate colors in iCal but I cannot figure out how to make them the same in iPhone, so I have events that are from different calendars show up on the same day in the same color, which things confusing.

I am NOT using Mobile Me.

Any and all help greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

this is all theoretical, but this is what i would try...

i think if you open your iphone's settings in iTunes, and open the "info" tab at the top, you can set it to sync your contacts to the mac's address book. As of now, it's probably set to entourage or Exchange or whatever...

so i think if you switch it to the Mac's address Book for one sync, and choose to "merge contacts" between your phone and Mac, then it will do it. Once that is complete, switch the setting in iTunes back to sync with entourage or exchange, and then it will resume syncing with your exchange server, but your mac will remember the contacts that were synced to it.
