Default iTunes won't download the 7.7.1 update.

When I try to download the update iTunes says "Accessing iTunes store" then it quits. Nothing. No download at all.

What can I do?

Try this. Uninstall itunes, reboot computer, reinstall itunes and try to get the update. You won't loose any music, ect. by doing this.

No, you don;t have to do that. Just go to Apple.com and go to the itunes section. Manually update by downloading the software, I do it all the time.

No problem.
I think my software update program is mentally challenged. It always tries to update like a week later than usual.

I'm with you on that one. Mine seems to dangle the carrot in front of you but won't let you have it. I've never been able to successfully update my iTunes through that update mgr. I also go to the website and do the update manually which hasn't failed me yet.

Default iTunes update not that simple

I just received a new 32G iTouch for my b'day. So, I go into my existing iTunes to check for updates even though I have set it up to automatically update since it's usually behind the curve. Currently it is at version 7.4.1.2 (on 8/10/08). Other info I was able to get includes:
CD Driver 2.0.6.1; CD Driver DLL 2.0.6.2; and Apple Mobile Device 1.1.1.1. I actually got the prompt to update but when I click "yes" it does absolutely nothing. I then went to apple's website to download it and it gets 99% to completion and quits. This tells me something is going on (or not) in the communication between my computer and Apple. So, I have not been successful in downloading the latest version (7.7.1) and thus unable to use my new iTouch.
When I first plugged in the iTouch to put my library on it I assumed (silly me) that Apple actually keeps the software up to date since I have commanded it to do so but all I get on the screen is a picture of an iPod cord plugging into iTunes. I have no clue what this means but since I don't have 7.7.1 it doesn't really matter.
My daughter bought an iTouch a few months ago plugged it in to her existing iTunes and voila! her library loaded without a hitch and she is happily adding music and otherwise managing her account. Her current version is 7.7.0.43. Me, BUPKUS!
Now short of removing my existing iTunes (my libraries are backed up on my hard drive) and attempting to completely download a new iTunes does anyone have any suggestions? I'm just afraid that I won't be able to get it to download properly and then I have no iTunes at all.
I have also considered creating a new user name on my computer, downloading a new iTunes then when I'm sure it is working delete the old one and from my back up load all of my files onto the new one. what do you think?
I love my iPod, But I hate Apple. They lock you into one way of doing things, don't offer a lot of help and when you talk to a "Genius" at the "Genius Bar" you get told that windows is the likely suspect. There is a reason the majority of the world works on PC's. Apple doesn't work with anything but apple. I'm rambling, sorry! It's just so frustrating.
Also, how can I remove my old iPod from my iTunes? when I plug it in for syncing is the only time it shows that particular iPod on the screen.

Thanks in advance for any and all help,
Socrmom

I used to have the exact same problem with downloading certain files in Windows which had nothing to do with Apple. I specifically recall one of the programs was Zone Alarm. It would get to x% and stop as those the server had timed out. The next time I'd attempt to dl the same file it would fly quickly to the point where it always stops and would stop immediately. Have you cleared your cache lately? If you've got a flash drive you can take it somewhere (friend's house, work etc.) and download the file to it then back at your home install it. Of course it doesn't fix your download problem but it will get your iTunes updated.

Default Thanks!

Thanks Mile High Rob! My spouse was thinking about this very thing. My daughter has a pretty updated version (7.6) and her iTouch works just fine (able to sync and added the 2.0 app). I'll try it tomorrow and let you know how it works.
It's so frustrating to get a new toy and not be able to play with it!
We even used another computer in the house to see if it would download iTunes and it stopped at the same point so we are thinking it is something on Apple's end. It's not closing the communication from the server or something.

Default WOOHOO I'm in Business!

Mile High Rob -

Just wanted to let you know that my spouse was able to download the 7.7.1 at work on their T1 line (we have cable modem at home) and brought it home tonight. He installed it under another user identity to keep it separate from the existing one in case something went wrong. Turns out he didn't need to. We went over to the main user account and it had also updated that one! WOOHOO! Nothing suffered the transition. I am now enjoying my new Touch. I also was able to update the app software and got 5 apps!
Thanks for all your help!
