This is the latest I have seen. Since this was written I have heard that itunes is the #1 music service so if Apple was indeed considering such a service, they may now change their mind and see no need for it.
IMO a subscription service would be a huge hit for Apple. If they charged a reasonable monthly fee, I think lots of people would jump on it.
