Hi all... I just sent this note to apple via
www.apple.com/feedback regarding ringtones. I realize there are workarounds, but it seems like apple is doing everything they can to shut down the loopholes and make it difficult for us. Making a ringtone should be as easy as clicking any audio file and adding it to the ringtone list. Here's what I sent apple:
I'm extremely disappointed by apple's decision to set up itunes such that I cannot use my existing digital music files as ringtones.
All of my music has been imported from CDs I own. I buy very few tracks online. I prefer to have the CD, as it sounds much much better than a digital music file, and I have painstakingly converted my entire library to be used with itunes for synching to my iPhone and iPod.
I own the CDs. I spent $599 on the phone. I even own Logic Pro 7.2, which I paid apple $999 for. I am well within my fair use rights under Copyright law to make my own ringtones from my own digital audio files -- and that is especially so for music that I myself have written, performed, and recorded!!
I understand if you'd like to reserve your fancy ringtone making tool for ringtone purchases from the itunes music store -- that's a great value-added feature, but PLEASE, I should be able to click on any DRM-free digital audio file and add that to the list of ringtones to be synchronized with my phone.
It certainly seems like apple is being the "evil corporation" here, more concerned with making money as a music store (or perhaps not rocking the boat by enabling record labels to trample my rights as a consumer?) than they are concerned with making a phone that works!
All of my previous phones from companies like motorola, RIM, and nokia allowed me to easily import any plain MP3 for use as a ringtone. It's downright embarassing that my fancy iPhone won't do this, due to restrictions placed on itunes!!
