automatic picture resize on sync?

Hi,

I just synced a large group of 7MP pictures to my iPhone. The original group is nearly 2GB, but it's taking up less than 250MB on the iPhone.

It's also obvious when doing zooms on the iPhone that the pictures have been resampled to a smaller size.

So, iTunes obviously resized the pictures during the sync. But to what? And why? And can this be configured somewhere?

Anyone know what size pictures are converted to during the sync?

I don't mind that much, but I would like to know what's going on.
