Problems running apps

I have to admit that I am a novice in this field (even though I am an advanced user in other it-areas).
I bought a new ipod touch but have had problems installing apps. I am sure that there's something stupid I am missing.
First I tried to download some free applications in Itunes (Ipint and Flashlight). They now reside in the top menu under applications, but I have no idea how to get them on the Ipod. Drag'n'drop doesn't work at all (as music do).
So now I upgraded to Iphone 2.0 user interface and got the appstore icon directly on the ipod touch. So now I have downloaded these applications (and another free one called portuguese). They are now icons on my ipod screen. But when I try to tap the icons they start up and then quit after a few seconds (jumps back to icon/home screen of the ipod).

I am 99% sure that there is some stupid detail I have missed, but right now I am tired of trying.

Hi!

You first have to purchase the iPhone software 2.0 for $8, after that you can install any free app, and any bought app you want!

Surprised nobody can help here. Is it that complicated?
Could the reason be that I chose the manual handling og things in Itunes or is this irrelevant?
