New Ipod Touch won't show up iTunes or charge

I got a new Ipod touch for Christmas and it has taken me 3 weeks to get to the point of even being able to try to charge it. First I had to upgrade my iMac G4 flat panel to Tiger. Then I had to repair a hard drive problem with Disk Warrior. Now I'm trying to charge the thing and the screen shows the USB cord and the iTunes graphic and the charging battery icon in the upper right. I let it charge (I thought) over night and nothing. It is also not showing up in iTunes. Anyone have a suggestion? I am using the USB port in the back of the iMac, not the keyboard. Is it not powerful enough?
