Default iPod touch trouble

Hi, I have a problem with my iPod touch. I have had it for about a week, everything has been running beautifully, and then I plugged it back in to my macbook after checking my email on it. iTunes said something about needing to check with the server to identify the iPod, and then said it detected an iPod in recovery mode, which I would have to restore to use. The only thing I had recently changed was a new Belkin flip-top case. Could the magnet in this case have something to do with it? Should I expect this often? Thank God for backups!
