iPod 1st generation or 2nd ????

How can you tell the difference btw the 1st or 2nd generation iPod??? My friend gave me one, and I want to jailbreak it but need to know what one it is.

I have an un-opened one and I was wondering how I would tell what generation it is as well? Can I tell by the serial number or something?

It has a volume control on the side....but I know there is a third gen and I don't want to open it....

well if you got it from a retail store like best buy on or after sept.9 its a third gen (thats only for the 32 and 64 gb though)

nope,they "claim" iits 3rd gen but all the interior is exactly the same opposed to the different interior of the 32 and 64 gb
