How many generations of Ipod touch are currently available?

I am new to the ipod touch market and while researching on the web cannot figure out if there is a first and second generation or only a first. I am not talking about the regular ipod, but rather the ipod touch. I am debating on waiting for the next generation of the touch, because i can wait and I would think there would be significant improvements. Any meaningful thoughts is much appreciated.

I am NOT an expert and don't take what I say as read, but after much research myself I just purchased the latest 32GB Model Direct from Apples Website. Whether this is classified as 3rd Gen or not I don't know, however it comes preinstalled with the latest OS Software which is 3.1.

I know for a fact that there was never a 64GB model before their latest release so THIS IS the latest GEN and I believe the 32GB model is identical barr the extra storage and earphones with mic and voice control.

The old 8GB Model was 1st gen, and I understand that the releases after that spawned a 2nd gen 8GB and the 32GB.

My understanding is the latest generation 32GB and 64GB is faster than the previous generations.

Safe to say I am overjoyed with my purchase. With Wifi setup in my home I was amazed at how fast the internet was and how easy, once used to navigating a small screen, operating it could be. Not to mention, just running past a Starbuck or a Staples where I live and quickly grabbing your email, lol .... perfect for me.

Do I wish it was an Iphone ? For the amount of calls I make on my cell ($24 per month on average) I couldn't validate the ridiculous calling plans for an Iphone here. Go Walmart Pay as you go phone ! YAY !
I would love to have an Iphone just so I dont carry 2 things with me but hey, until the plans become more reasonable .... I LOVE My TOUCH

Oh PS ... you want the lastest verion .... order from Apples website ... be prepared the Unit comes from China .. however .. mine arrived within 4 days from order (Seattle)
