Help, my brand new ipod touch wont turn on

I just got an ipod touch from my mom. I opened it and connected to my pc. Then an apple logo showed up on the ipod touch screen and disappeared. I have the latest iTunes installed but it does not detect the ipod. I tried to hold the turn on/off button and the menu button, the apple logo came up again. at the same time the iTunes told me that it has detected an ipod that needed to be restored. I followed the instructions and clicked on "restore and update." everything seemed fine but my ipod suddenly powered off itself although it was still connected to the pc.

does anyone know what exactly cause this problem. THis has been bothering me for days. Your help is much appreciated

The same thing happened to my friend's iPod Touch. Fresh out of the box it wouldn't work. She had to return it to the store and got a brand new one. I tried finding a fix online and messed around with it for a few hours but to no avail.
