It's probably pointless to speculate on what might be for the ipod touch software but I can tell you what my experience has been so far. Today at 1400EST I upgraded to iTunes 7.7 and the Apps Store was not readily visible. I also checked for updates for my ipod touch and it said I'm running the latest firmware. I did purchase the additional software that was released recently to enable the additional features but that was approx. a month ago. To remedy the issue of the Apps Store not showing in iTunes, I simply searched for a new app IE: Super Monkey Balll, went to the developers home page, then in iTunes clicked on the Apps Store button at the top of the screen. This added the Apps Store to my iTunes home page. I tried to download and install the remote control software and it said I downloaded it successfully but it was no where to be found. This is because the 2.0 software is required to install it. The update I installed to purchase the additional apps, did not constitute the 2.0 software update. I looked for an update, even to purchase, thinking that I needed to download something for the touch but there is nothing showing available at this time.
I imagine when the iPhone3G is released, the 2.0 software update will be available (again..speculation). I will be camping out tonight to get the new iPhone so I guess I'll find out when everybody else does.
