Default friend got an 16 gb ipod touch 1st gen, questions

like the title says my friend got a 1st gen ipod touch. after seeing and using my iphone he had to have one (wanted an iphone but just signed a new 2 yr contract with verizon a month or so ago). anyways i am VERY familiar with jailbreaking iphones and what not, is there anything i should know about ipod touch's?

he is currently on 1.1.5 and wants to get the app store on it. does he have to upgrade to 2.0+ to get that, and if so how much is that (i remember reading somewhere it was free for iphones but a fee for ipod touch). is there any way to hack past that?

any other tips or tricks for the ipod touch would be greatly appreciated. thanks and i look forward to learning more about this sweet product and contributing to this section in the future.

I own an Itouch 16gb and I had to pay Ł5.99 GBP . I connected my touch to Itunes and downloaded the software which was available about 6 months ago. I dont know of a way of how you can download the app store for free?
