Battery life (or lack of) on 4th gen?

So I had a 3rd gen and decided to get a 4th since the 3rd was dying on me... it reached that point...

anyways, so yesterday, I took it to work and this thing (the new 4th gen) was guzzling the battery like there's no tomorrow!! I turned off the album scroll on the main page, turned off the cover flow (which I can't stand anyways) on turning because that's just annoying and dimmed the brightness which kinda helped.

I also don't know why when it changes songs, the album doesn't change til I click on it for volume or next or whatever.

Any thoughts?
