will original phone still work?

I'm planning on getting a new Iphone next week. When I deactivate my older model, will it still work (like an Itouch) without ATT service?. My wife would like to keep it because of some of the neat Apps, but she uses Verizon as a provider. (I'm not interested in unlocking the old phone).

Yes, it will work as an iTouch. Any app that uses internet will only work on WiFi,

Yes, it will work; just keep the deactivated SIM card in it and change its name. When I got my 3G, it assumed the "identity" from the V1, so I simply have renamed my V1. It works great, and does everything but phone service of course.

How did you rename your v1 iPhone? Both my v1 and v2 have the same name.

Highlight the name of the phone in the devices panel of itunes and right click to select rename.
