I like the Nokia scene because it doesn't have the rabid fanboyism present with other brands, but then you don't need to use a Nokia for long to figure out things aren't quite right. They just seem to slip up, but they're sort of silly things, they seem to forget to update aspects of theirs phones or overlook silly things. Apple however, got all the difficult stuff done on their first go. The aesthetics were appealing, the interface was great, the music playback and web browsing were all top-notch. It was like they were in line to make the best phone ever then when it came to finalising a few details they got a time machine and asked 2003 to develop a few of the features:

No 3G
Crap camera capabilities
No memory card slot

Then to develop the rest of it they came back to 2007 but first of all they pulled some evil communists out of Soviet Russia.

No removable battery
No homebrew
Crippled bluetooth
No MMS (not that I care)

And there's probably more stuff I've forgotten but I'll leave it for now. The iPhone's not the most technologically advanced phone on the market contrary to what some believe (I won't argue on this so don't start). Sure the touch screen's nice and although the Apple fans don't seem to go on about it, the processor's much faster than those found in other phones. Other than that it's all be done before but then I don't really see much they can add to phones for now apart from making the user experience better which is what the iPhone kickstarted (bout bloody time). Yeah a few phones have GPS but if you've ever used it you'll see it's still nothing compared to a proper GPS module, maybe in a year or so. But as you can probably gather from this by now is I hate the iPhone because it had so much potential. It created a whole new market which it had all to itself, the user-friendly non business-oriented touch-screen market, which turned out to be pretty big, and Apple make this phone which feels like more of a novelty than a proper effort. If they'd sorted the errors that every critic picked up on with an hour of first getting the device they'd have a cracking phone which truly would be comparable to nothing. Sure the battery life would still be lame but considering the huge screen and mighty processor I think it holds up pretty damn well, and if it had a removable battery then you could easily replace it with a more advanced one from the third party market when they become available.

Now my final rant which I can't believe nobody has mentioned before; the iPhone-PC/Mac connectivity. Why the hell do I have to use iTunes? I hated using it for my iPod, never mind my mobile phone as well. My old Nokia's amazing in this respect, I can plug it in to any computer and it'll work just like a portable USB drive, but the best thing is that I can do the same over bluetooth, and that's before I've installed the Nokia PC Suite software. As soon as I step in the house with my N93 (a year and a half old might I add) it hooks up with my PC and starts downloading my latest messages onto my PC which I can then read and reply to straight from my nice big keyboard without so much as cranking my neck down. Then I might want to put some MP3s on my phone so I can listen to some stuttering music as I cruise down the street so I browse to my music folder within the regular Windows Explorer (all the Nokia stuff is running in the background as a service) and I simply find the folder I want and right click it -> 'send to' -> 'N93 memory card' and it's sorted. Sticks it straight on my phone and the media player finds it automatically. Not to mention that to install software on my phone, rather than having to void the warranty, I merely have to double click on the downloaded .sis file which has the software installed on my phone within about one minute (and that's unless I feel like downloading it straight to the phone over the net). I really thought the homebrew scene would have cracked the bluetooth by now and had something like this going but I've been disappointed. I'll stick with my iPhone for now but if Apple haven't at least unlocked the OS and bluetooth by next summer then I'll be straight back to Nokia. Can't wait for Symbian Touch.

I started to read it, got bored and stopped. I love people like you, who think they are trying to start an intelligent debate, and no one cares. God, go back to your hole.

You might want to delete the iHate link, Hayes.

Some people might actually click it and consider it offensive.

i never understood what it is about iTunes that causes some people such distress. i find it so intuitive. music - create a playlist. video, photos - same thing. it's easy, it's streamlined and everything is laid out in front of you. what's not to like about it?

oh, and the whole 3G argument...maybe i'm blessed with good service or expect too little, but edge is more than sufficient when im not on wifi.

i wont say Nokia makes good or bad phones. ive never had one. my question is this...arent they both just phones? i cant imagine feeling so strongly about a telephone. a telephone! find a cause if you want a debate. isn't there an election of some sort coming up?

iTunes is pretty easy to use... the main problem i have with it is that it's a HUGE program. But in the days of quad-core processors and such, i can't see it being an issue for many people.

I'll switch my Treo 650, with dozens of expensive apps, for your iPhone. I'll throw in a free Nokia that's about 1 year-old.
Have fun.
