Evidently there was a press release from Apple that stated July 11th as well. I guess Steve just said early July, because he didn't want to divulge the release date for iPhone 3G at that time of the keynote. If you'll remember, the 2.0 firmware update was discussed before the iPhone 3G.

"...and the 2.0 software upgrade will be available on July 11th along with... ...a brand NEW iPHONE!!!" *cue big-band playing the Price is Right, and roll up crimson curtain with gold trimmings to unveil the iphone 3G on a spinning dias with only average-looking models in old-fashioned swimsuits so as not to offend the viewing audience* *oh, and don't forget the flashing lights*
