screen freezing upon incoming calls - help, please!

Intermittently, my iPhone gives me a massive problem. When the phone rings, the screen goes completely black and is unresponsive to touch. I can get back on again by simultaneously pressing the square button at the bottom and the top silver button, but this is very inconvenient. However this doesn't happen every time i receive a call so it is difficult for me to show any shop assistants. Is it a hardware malfunction? I have updated all the latest iPhone settings through iTunes.

What can I do to solve this problem?
    Thanks.

I would try a restore and if that doesn't help it may be a hardware issue for Apple to look at. Hope there is an Apple Store near you.

That's what I'm thinking but a restore won't hurt to try.

Just to clarify make sure you don't have your fingers covering up the light sensors in the top left corner.

tried out your solutions but still having problems

Thanks very much for all of your advice.

I tried a restore but the problem persisted so i booked an appointment at the genius bar. the genius found a slightly faulty on/off switch so supplied me with a new handset.

Immediately after i had no problems. but a day later, i restored my contacts etc from my computer. since then, i'm having the same problem of the phone freezing when i receive calls. could it be that it is caused by a virus downloaded from my PC?

    what should i do now?

thanks again for your help and any more advice would be gratefully received!

I've been having the same problems on iPhone 3G 16Gb in the UK.
After trawling several forums I came across some advive on Apple's own Discussions forum !!
Try Apple.co. Support Discussions iPhone Hardware iPhone 3G Topic : Freezing when answering a call.

Seems that this is a quite a common occurance.

I'm just trying some of the suggestions :

Most likely it seems that there is a ( or more than one ) corrupt entry in your Contacts file - (( BUT it would have to be your partner's wouldn't it !!! ))

See the IBarfield entry for Jan 29 2009 re Genius finding the corrupt entry, and
the Envision99 entry dated Feb 10 2009 for the steps to remove and re-add the offending Contact.

I've just done all of these steps and wait to see if this clears up the intermittant problem

    Good Luck

A month has gone by since I carried out the steps from the Envision99 entry dated Feb 10 2009 , and I have had no further problems !!!!!

Seems like "corrupt Data" probably from your Contact list, causes this problem.
