my photos are missing

I took about 400 vacation pics on my iphone but when I got back to check them there were less than 50 on the camera roll. what happened? Are they hidden somewhere or did it not really take the pics? how could it let me take all those pics and not save them? There was plenty of space availible so how could this happen? Ok well if it actually took the pics is there any way to recover them?

I have the original iphone:

DCIM 100-3 pics 101-empty 102-empty 103-empty 104-47 pics

did you sync your phone with another computer other than the one you normally use?
Here is something Apple doesn't really talk about. If you setup your phone and sync to a desktop PC and you go on vacation and sync to a laptop, it pretty much wipes out your info. If you still have all your contacts and music, this is NOT the case, but if you have already done a sync to your desktop since returning, it still could be.
Look on the laptop and see if you have any pictures on there.

(of course I am Assuming that you had a laptop with you on your vacation.)

well the photos were missing before I even connected to my pc. I just wanted to take a quick peek at them before i connected but less than 50 of the hundreds I took where on the camera roll.

I just got a new pc but I have not synced my iphone on it yet. I have been accesssing the photos manually and just copyed them to my pc. I don't want to sync because I know everything will get whiped out.

just an update....I took a couple more pics but the camera does not work at all. the shutter opens and closes as if it's taking a pic but nothing goes into the camera roll. I'm pretty sure I can't recover pics it never really took but how can I get this camera woring again?

Try a full restore and set up as a new phone, if that doesnt fix it then a trip to a genius for a swap will have to be arranged
