If you happen to be jailbroken, try Apollo or MobileChat

You should see some chat apps coming after 2.0 is released.

When chatting online, does the iPhone update what the other person is saying "instantly" like its supposed to be?

I've never been satisfied with mobile versions of Instant Messengers. I usually just set my messengers at home to forward to my phone, but then i have to wait for someone to talk to me first.

I read yesterday on TUAW that Apollo would be making it to the App Store with 2.0. While it has been available on Installer for quite a while, now they are focusing on the SDK for a "legal" release next month.
