Default Make Your Edge Connection 5x Faster!

How is it done? Going through Googles Proxy. Thanks to iPhonePOV for the tip. Boot up Safari and enter the following URL: http://www.google.com/m (the m stands for mobile) Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and push the link for 'Settings' Here's the KEY PART: Under the setting for 'Format Pages For Your Mobile Phone.' Select 'YES' Now, 'SAVE' your settings and the page will automatically return to Google Mobile. From this point on, anything you search for, and link to from Google mobile will be formatted for the iPhone by Google's Mobile Proxy Server. Search for any site in the world and Google will shape it to fit your iPhone. Once you visit a page you like that's gone through the Proxy Server, simply bookmark it, and whenever you are on the EDGE network, you can view the Google Mobile Version of your page by clicking the bookmark. Remember if you clear your cache or your cookies the settings will reset. I and My friend have tested it and it works very well. Video can be seen here: Thanks to iPhonePOV for this info.

I just finished watching the video and I was sort of impressed.

The thing is, to make the EDGE connection 5x faster, you have to view the sites you're visiting, in the 'mobile' version of the site. These 'mobile' sites look very similar to viewing webpages on other PDAs and smartphones.

While viewing the content gets you the information, I think we all agree it's cooler seeing the actual webpage as if you were on your PC/laptop.

I did notice that at the end, the author mentions that you can view the 'real' webpage by clicking on a link at the bottom of the page. I wonder if going to the 'mobile' version of the site first, and then clicking on the HTML link, will it load faster since most of the data has already been downloaded.

It looked that way by the example the author used. I think I will go test it out tomorrow at my local Apple store.

I tried this on my iPhone, bookmarked it as Google iPhone and yes, I do get there faster even after visiting , bookmarking, and returning. The simple steps such as this are very helpful and it impresses those who thought it was all going to be slow.

Hey Jac,

When you revisited the website, does it load faster when you want to see it in HTML format?

Thanks

This is not actually using mobile versions of Websites. It's a proxy server that can digest complex Webpages and deliver them in a more mobile-friendly format--all faster than downloading the entire Website directly to the mobile device.

You can test this by trying sites that have no mobile version at all, and you will see that it still works, and is still faster.

This not a black and white issue, and for me nothing to do with "cool." It's a great tip for when you need to view a Website under EDGE as quickly as possible. Doesn't mean you have to use it all the time.

Again, to the OP, thanks for mentioning this great tip! I was actually wondering if there were any kind of compression/simplification proxies that would work on the iPhone.

Your welcome, on my old 8125 and 8525 Opera browser did this also but not as good as google does it and It really made things alot faster and I was just waiting for someone to either hack the browser or to find a proxy to help making browsing a bit faster, just thought i'd share it when i did come across it.

Thanks for the update Jac, if viewing the page in a mobile friendly way, and then clicking on the html link will load the page in the 'normal' webpage mode, then it might be worth getting the iphone instead of waiting for a 3G version.

Heres what I do:
I've bookmarked this bookmarklet: Mobile Version
Now just go to any normal page, then open your bookmarks and click 'Mobile Version.' The site will change to the Google mobile version, then just bookmark that new site to always get to it.

Here's the javascript for those interested
