I must have been really lucky. When the iPhone first came out, I purchased 50 (5 boxes of 10), unlocked them all and sold them. Not one ever came back to me with any issues. I always told the buyers, if you have any problems, contact me straight away. I never heard a thing?
My friends also did the same as me and they never had any come back to them either.
I tried to go back and buy more iPhones, but the restrictions had been put into place by then and the Apple store would not sell me anymore. I managed to get a few from the AT&T store, but it was a pain only being able to buy 2 iPhones at a time.

They sent me a "new" replacement phone free of charge since I am still in my one year warranty. Any thing wrong with your phone? We have 4 in our family and we've sent every one of them back for a repair (side volume button stuck on 2 of them; the last one just kept giving NO SERVICE messages randomly) and we all got "replacement phones" back within a few days, no charge.
