iPhone screen black while charging?????

Is my iphone supposed to be off while charging? The screen is black right now. . .

Do I have to turn it on in order to figure out if it's done charging?
Does turning it on draw power from the AC or battery while it's plugged in

yes, it's normal for the screen to go black while charging.

yes, you need to turn it on to see the battery meter to see the charging status.

i'm guessing it draws power from the battery first while it's plugged in, but then it's instantly re-charged from the AC.

how do I know when it's done charging?

People keep mentioning a green battery meter. I don't see it. When I turn on the phone, all I see is a white battery in the top right hand side of the screen

hit the home key to get to the slider to unlock your phone (don't unlock) and you should see the green battery status icon.
