Does that mean you can't use that Time Machine?

Then you need to do one of the other suggestions above.

I'm a mac user as well, and this same exact thing just happened to me. Any mac useful mac users out there who can help? If you figure this out, please post how you did it!

Exact same thing happened to me... 1000 contacts gone in a second and I swear it self-checked the erase all contacts on the computer button because I specifically checked it before I pressed sync.

Also when i put 14 contacts back on my phone, it promted me asking if it was ok that I was changing more than 5% of my contacts on my mac! Ahhh a safety for iphone to mac but none the the other way!

I hate my iphone and macbook so very very much right now

Give this a try, it might work if you haven't sync'd yet.
Settings -> Mail,Contacts,Calendars -> Import SIM contacts.

For future reference, you can sync your contacts with a Google/Gmail or Yahoo acct in iTunes.

Default Contacts Deleted

Same thing happened to me. I just purchased the iPhone 3G and added about 40 contacts. I did this yesterday evening after syncing to iTunes. Today the contacts are gone. I have not synced since adding the contacts, so it has nothing to do with the sync process. I tried Import SIM Contacts, but nothing. Any ideas?
