Default iPhone 2g sim card in a 3g?

I was wondering what happens when you put an iPhone 2g sim in an iPhone 3g? The reason I ask is because I may be acquiring a 3g from craigs list and my wife currently has 2g. I'm hoping it would work fine and we wouldn't have to pay the $30 data plan since her account shows the plan for $20 on the 2g! Any help is appreciated.

The iPhone should work properly.

If you take the SIM out and locate a string on the SIM Card, somewhere you should find 3G. If not, it'll be a 2G sim and 3G won't work, so you'll need to contact your local psyphone provider.

I dont think it will work, im sure that in the US the original Iphone shipped with an Edge (non 3g) sim. Someone from the USA will confirm, but quite sure the original Iphones didnt ship with 3g sims

I couldn't find anything on the AT&T site, but might as well check with them to be sure.

EDIT: confirm that no new SIM card required for 2G to 3G:

Yes, definatly, the reason I think this is because the original iPhone was not 3g compatible and therefore didnt need a 3g sim

That's what I thought, but apparently the SIM they provided is 3G compatible.

The only thing that has me skeptical is why wouldn't all 3g users call AT&T and claim that their 3g broke and they have since purchased a 2g so they would now like the data plan lowered from $30 to $20!?

Becuase I'd think that they have procedures before they issue a new device.

My 2g had a 3g Sim.... I am in USA

3g sim works just fine in the 2g.

I don't think the sim has anything to do with your data speed. I believe your plan dictates that, not the sim.

He sais 2G sim in iPhone 3G. Not just plan but other factors including signal strength affects data transfer rate.
