International travel with iPhone - Australia

I am traveling to Australia next month for a few weeks. It would be super cool if I can buy a local SIM card and continue to use my iPhone while I am there. Does anyone know how to undo the network lock without permanent damage to anything? Plus, I guess i am not sure if the frequency bands line up.

As far as I know noone has able to do any sort of hacking in the Iphone regarding network. you will just have to pay the crazy international charges.
