EDIT: Wait when you say buying an iphone off the internet ... do you mean unlocked? Or a 1st generation iphone?

original iphone

If it is not an unlocked phone, you will need to get a new sim from at&t and then you can set it up on itunes. You might have to start the data plan to get it going, but you can remove it after a month. If the phone is already unlocked, you can just pop in any at&t sim card and it will work. This is the reason that unlocked iphones bring more money on ebay than the at&t only iphones.

I got my iPhone stolen and for some time I used another phone. It was unlocked and all I needed to do was pop the sim in and it worked for calls.

Ok---to the OP....you already have att yes? No, you can't use the sim you have. You will have to take the phone you bought to ATT and have them give you a new sim card. Because you are trying to use a phone on ATT network when you already have ATT you dont have to have it unlocked. IT's an extra, but why when you are using the phone on the network it's supposed to be on

Unlocking is not "an extra;" it's a way of getting the iPhone to work on a network other than AT&T.

You don't get any additional features.
