Go onto Ebay, do a search for your phone, then down on the left side you would check "completed listings" to see what people have gotten for theirs. If you read their descriptions, you'll see if the sellers did a jailbreak. Good luck! I just sold mine and my husband's 3G for $270.00 and $305.00 without the unlock/jailbreak that others on there are offering. There were many out there for sale so we're lucky ours even sold.

By the way, I would word your sale as you did above.."babied its whole life", etc. People seem to prefer the more personal sales and want to see that someone really enjoyed their phone, it makes them want to buy it from you as opposed to a store. I have sold about 6 cell phones on Ebay over the last 5 years and I always make back the money I paid for the phone - after using it for a year! I baby my phones and state that in my sales, I give specifics.

I bought an 8GB 2G with 6 months of Apple care left on it for $150. That seems to be about right these days. The 2G was in excellent condition with a screen protector. It included all accessories in the box.

Be advised that AT&T no longer offers Pick a Plan pay as you go plans for the 2G iPhone. They offer two year contracts or nothing. This may or may not have an effect on the resale prices on these.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will give it a shot. I might try jailbreakin it and unlocking it, been something I've wanted to try and maybe will get more bids on eBay.
