I don't have a problem with the speaker volume, especially when I remind myself that no iPod has ever had an external speaker before. I've survived this long with an iPod that had no speakers, so it's not an issue for me. And with the included wired headphones and a bluetooth headset, I never use the speakerphone feature either.

Granted, I admit Apple got a few things wrong on the iPhone, and it is not perfect. But I must also admit that Apple got a whole lot of things RIGHT as well. So you've gotta ask yourself if the things you DON'T like about the iPhone FAR outweigh the things you DO like about it? Are the problems SO SEVERE that your only alternative is to return it, or can you wait for Apple to release a few software fixes that would give you the device you always wanted (and stood in line just to get)? To have probably the hottest and most popular handheld device this short century, I can wait a couple of extra minutes for email, or deal with volume issues. When I think about how much I put up with on my Treo all these years, the iPhone's shortcomings don't even come close to being a true problem!

I think I have earned a right to be heard here! I think Apple is a very innovative company, but they are also masters of marketing. A search for contacts, and select all delete for e-mails are not simple over sights. Any company that produces such a beautiful product, and refines it to such a level, does not forget these basic features by accident. I am willing to bet that these simple fixes will not find there way into this phone, but will become part of the next gen. As far as the battery goes Pure corporate Greed! Do I hate Apple? Hell no. Do I think they make a great product hell yes. Do I think they know how to market? Indeed!
Well if you recognize how Apple works, operates, and markets it's products, I'm not sure what exactly you're complaining about??? Especially since you've been a strong supporter of its products over the years.

There is NO WAY Apple can include EVERY SINGLE FEATURE every single person would ever want, keep the device slim, AND keep it affordable. If Apple made the iPhone a handheld ATM machine, somebody would complain it only gives $20's and not $5's.

I don't work for Apple, so I can't say why they left out those features you feel are important. Nor can I say why Palm has never allowed WiFi in any of its TREO Phones, yet that never stopped people from buying it like crazy. No one is trying to take away your right to be "heard" as you say. But every device is just not going to do everything. For Apple's first true outing to create virtually a handheld computer (Mac OSX, iPod, Phone, Web, etc.), I'd say it was a pretty decent first job. But anyone who feels differently, fine...take it back. Somehow I doubt your returning it will shut the company down!

Who said anything about taking it back? I love this thing. I just agreed with an earlier poster. That's it. That's my take on it. This is the first cell phone I have owned myself. I waited for this phone for years. I'm not about to bring it back, but I still don't agree with, and will admit about some of it very real short comings. I hope it gets better through firmware upgrades. I already know 3 other people besides myself and my wife who own it. I wish Apple luck, But I STILL HATE THE NON RELACEABLE BATTERY! You must admit that suck!

LOL yeah I guess it would have been nice to have a swappable battery. But then that also probably would have added thickness to the device, and I wouldn't have wanted that either.

I won't hold my breath for a removeable battery, since Apple proved long ago that won't happen on their iPod models. But I am looking forward to the software updates...and for anyone holding out for this so-called "Version 2" may be waiting a LOONNNGGG time. Enjoy your iPhone!

Can you use a bluetooth earpiece as headphones? In other words, can i listen to the ipod through my earpiece?

Default I hear you get the tool that works for you

If you think it won't work for you then you should return it. But if you are a long time Apple user you know a few things. First Apple software always comes out very basic and then is revised in later versions.

But to be honest they don't every pack their software full of features. I think a lot of your complaints will be updated in Software Updates.

To all of you who say this will not happen go back and listen to Steve Jobs comments about the way the are accounting for the iPhone on their books. He says they want to be able to add features to existing iPhone customers so they had to make an accounting choice up front so they would not have to charge these customers. So I think there will be Software Updates for free on existing customers phones.

With that said if auto checking email every 15 mins plus just check email as you feel like does not work for you then you need to get the tools that work for you.

I guess you could have done more research on it and waited a few weeks/months to see what others had said if these features are critical. But I can understand the rush to get one as I did the same.

I truly wish you good luck and hope Apple adds the features you want so that you can come back. For me the iPhone is great and I am sure will improve over time.

Whether I need my email checked every minute or every hour, is irrelevant. You have to take into account what your competitors are doing and when most other phones give their users the freedom to either set a check time or are automatically checking every 5 mins, it makes Apple look archaic.
A couple things AppleLA, 1) Updates may address the deletion issue which seems to be your biggest issue. 2) You can manually check your email if you need it more often than 15 minutes. Thought the 15 minute timeframe is probably to preserver battery life. 3) You might be best served to just return the phone and go with one that you're happy with.

I think upon going back, you will notice the difference though in what the iPhone does do well. Good luck to you.

Default Mail auto-deletes, and you can rent iPhones

Originally Posted by tony3d View Post

I not only had to delete each one by hand, then I had to do it all over again to delete them from the trash. That's 600 time I had to delete e-mails! The other thing is the battery. I know of no other cell phone on the planet that doesn't have a replaceable battery. I can understand that maybe on an iPod, but it's totally unacceptable on a cell phone. Aside from the $85.00 rip off price for the battery I can't afford to be without my phone for 3 days as I use it for my business, and I don't think I should be asked to after spending $600.00.
Those emails would all be gone after as little as a day if you configured the email client for it - there is no need to delete them all manually, the way you are supposed to work with the iPhone mail is to use it as a quick view onto recent mail. It's more managable to remove mail as it comes in instead of trying to bult delete it.

As for the battery, you wouldn't be an hour without the phone if you simply use the $30 iPhone rental and pop in the SIM from your current iPhone - considering that you might have to do that once every two years, that doesn't seem bad at all to me considering that a custom battery gives you more time than a replaceable battery in the same space.

If you are going on an international flight, simply use one of the many iPod battery packs to provide more power to the phone - they also charge the phone while in use so when you arrive you'll be able to call people.
