Default Field test mode???

on an other forum under the heading of improving the iPhone reception by adding a bit of tape to the back of the sim card, I saw a reference to "Field Test Mode"??? How do you put the phone in that mode???

I remember trying that right after I got my iphone, but I could never find anything useful in the information. It really just looks like information for the at&t techs to use during testing.
