Default EDGE upgraded nation-wide

Just received an SMS update...EDGE has been completely upgraded, a $50 million dollar upgrade.

The iPhone also passed data and voice tests in various terrains.

It says more news is coming soon...I guess we'll see.

Hmmmm. Let's see. Let's say ATT gets an additional million new customers out of this deal with Apple. That means, just in upgrading the EDGE network, they are spending $50 per new customer. That's just one small aspect of this whole thing. There was also the story this weekend about ATT hiring on thousands of temp workers to deal with the rush of people wanting to get an iphone. I'm sure the list of costs probably exceeds the money they will make on this in the short term.

This all reinforces my whole argument that ATT is in this, not because they will make buckets of cash on this thing, they are in it for market share.

Yes, it was from AT&T. SMS updates for employees (I am not one, but I signed up).

The link was posted on here probably 2 days ago.

I got the same text.

AT&T is really trying with this. Like Rob says they cannot afford not to.

If they've completed the upgrades, I certainly couldn't tell it this weekend.

That news is almost a month old

http://weblog.infoworld.com/techwatc...es/012272.html

and $50 mil isn't really all that much when you consider that they spend a few Billion a year on just expanding service. Makes for a good headline though.

ATT's entire market cap is only $1.12B. They certainly aren't spending a few billion a year on expanding services.
