With the speaker so close to the mic, I think it's unavoidable.

As I never use speakerphone mode, I never ran into this. I usually use the plug-in headset that came with it. I'm more bothered by the echo from the other line, i.e. what I say comes so loud out of their phone that I hear it again a second after I say it. Confuses the **** out of me when I'm trying to speak a long sentence...And that's not something the iPhone can fix, so I live with it.
