Default Curious...

I lost phone/edge service for about 10 minutes tonight. My wife's iPhone was fine. I reset my phone about 6 times to no avail. It eventually came back on its own.

What do you think causes this? Network adjustments? Wouldn't they affect all callers in a certain area?

Discuss.

I keep hearing this more and more from people, there has been several people here especially today that have had problems, could it be some glitch somewhere?

p.s. I posted this somewhere else here but the new avatar is really cute!

Hehe, thanks. I havent' told the wife yet, but I figure her profile is innocuous enough not to cause concern....

And yeah, there does seem to be quite a bunch of these types of reports lately. I know AT&T is continually adding Edge capacity and are focused especially on 3G expansion right now. Just wondering why it is so phone-specific.

it seems to be a phone to phone problem. for example the same situation you are dealing with, I've also encountered it. My girlfriend and I were flying back from florida, edge service sucked in most places in the orlando area, both phones were off..busy watching something on the tv(jetblue)...so anyways we both turned our iphones on at the same time. Hers showed full service and mine none. I had to reboot my phone to get it working.
Point being, even though something might be identical, all things are not made equally. there is always that one imperfection that causes a glitch or a malfunction.
I do have to admit though, my iPhone is jailbroken and hers is not, could be a contributing factor, but I noticed it before I jailbroken....
take that with a grain of salt as they say...

or

it could be AT&T f'ing with us...lol

I remember a few weeks back a lot of people in my area with AT&T were having bad service for a few days. like it would take a few tries just to get a call to go through and I couldnt get edge. although I think it was likely that this was due to a congested network, I think its also possible that they could have been upgrading towers or something like that...

Ours are both jailbroken, with largely similar apps.

I think it's probably a result of AT&T fiddling around with the network. It can be a bit annoying though, that's for sure.

I agree that it should affect both of your phones, but it could have something to do with the last time the phone acquired the signal from the tower.

This sounds like the issue I posted here.

There are a number of observations, but none that add up to a happy ending: power off your iphone periodically to get the latest AT&T cellular update (sort of like VZW's updated preferred roaming list); look for interferences amongst your installed 3rd party apps - one of them may just be giving you grief in an indirect manner.

Interesting, I tried to call my bank about five times today, around 2:50pm and I kept getting the "call failed" message before it even rang. I had five bars of service! Never seen anything like it before. I thought maybe it was the number so I tested by calling one of my contacts. The contact call went through no problem and subsequently the call to bank. Weird.
