And yeah, there does seem to be quite a bunch of these types of reports lately. I know AT&T is continually adding Edge capacity and are focused especially on 3G expansion right now. Just wondering why it is so phone-specific.

it seems to be a phone to phone problem. for example the same situation you are dealing with, I've also encountered it. My girlfriend and I were flying back from florida, edge service sucked in most places in the orlando area, both phones were off..busy watching something on the tv(jetblue)...so anyways we both turned our iphones on at the same time. Hers showed full service and mine none. I had to reboot my phone to get it working.
Point being, even though something might be identical, all things are not made equally. there is always that one imperfection that causes a glitch or a malfunction.
I do have to admit though, my iPhone is jailbroken and hers is not, could be a contributing factor, but I noticed it before I jailbroken....
take that with a grain of salt as they say...
