Default Credit Check?

I am an existing customer on my parents family plan, and i am going to pay with my debit card...what do they need a credit check for ? Is that for a new customer, they just run the credit check to see if they can get a plan once they get home or what? I guess I am just a little confused as to why i would need to do one since im already a customer.

Deposit is for those who don't have credit worthy of a cellphone contract. It can be as high as $500 I believe.

Its for people with no credit or bad credit, its their way of getting money out of you if you dont pay your bill on time.

Minimum new 2-year wireless service plan and activation fee required to activate iPhone features, including iPod; plans are subject to AT&T credit approval.

From the apple site/rate plans
