The battery had quit holding a charge for two - three days like it did originally. After a rather lengthy discussion with the applecare support person, I was given the okay for battery replacement. I also had a small crack in the lower right hand corner that ran from about two inches up from the lower right corner to the Home button circle. I didn't ask to have it repaired, but apple did simply replace the phone with a refurbished model for no charge. The entire process took three days - overnight shipping out, one day to identify the issue, and one day to ship back to me. It arrived this morning at 9:15 AM. That applecare warranty was the best $69 that I've ever spent.

I was going to simply make a post telling how happy I was with the service, but when I saw this thread, I decided to just add my experience. There was never any intention to deceive apple in any way. I would have been happy if they had disassembled my phone and just soldered in a new battery and then reassembled it again, but a newly refurbished phone is ooooo so much better.
Good to see you again Cols. It's been a while.

I remember you had gotten the Applecare through 2009 so it's great to see that it worked out well for you. Any intentions on picking up the possible new iPhone this summer?

@binks - yeah a new one is under serious consideration. I really wanted to make sure I got a fresh battery installed before I passed it on down to one of the children. I almost got the 3G model last summer, but because I spend most of my time in wifi locations, it's never really been a necessity for me. The rumors about the 3 gen version really have me interested because of the possibility of a better camera and MMS. I guess we'll all know in a couple of weeks exactly what we can expect.

OK. I finally got around to getting my screen repaired by http://www.crackedphonescreen.com . He did a great job for $89.99. It looks like new and I am extremely happy with the work they have done.

Hey everybody, been awhile since I've been back to EIC! I am still using my 4gb v1 iphone from July of '07 and I am so attached to the sucker that I don't want to upgrade to 3G or 3GS... however! i'd love to get a v1 replacement by this method. My screen isn't cracked at all but I do have lines of dead pixels... and I have experienced this crackling from the speaker sometimes (especially when switching from speaker phone to itunes and vice versa). So my question is: if I don't have applecare and my warranty is over, could I still call apple and say that I have the manufacturer speaker problem and recieve a new v1? Also, if I do decide to get a new v1, does all my texts/emails/apps get erased for good?! Thanks a lot guys for helping me out; i love all you apple iphone enthusiasts!!! good day! ;P

I recently had my phone crack and I took it in to the apple store, eager to hear that they now repalaced the screens. What was failed to be mentioned to me is that they charge $199 to repair the screen. (hmm seems kinda high, knowing that THAT IS WHAT I PAID FOR THE PHONE!) I was very upset until I found http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair.com. They repaired my iPhone 3G screen for only $69.99 and it looked like new. They even offered me a 1 year warranty on the product. I was very impressed!

I was told by an Apple Rep that they would exchange my V1 with cracked LCD for $100 and was told it was the same for a Single Crack Glass or Water Damaged.

When the 3G came out they wouldn't exchange my water damaged one (in August), but was told they would do it now.

Not sure how true this is, but will give it a try when I have some extra cash laying around.
