Big iPhone problem! Please help... :(!
Hello there,
This isn't actually a problem I have come across ever on this forum, neither on Google search. I'm not very good at explaining myself at all but I hope this will make sense to people...
But basically:
I currently own an 8gb Jailbroken iPhone which I have had for about a month and a half now and it has been working fine up until now.
I picked up my phone the other day and the sound does not work at all on anything. I can't get one sound on it (Keyboard clicks, ringtones, applications, iPod etc.)
Here is what happens when I go on specific things involving sound:
Applications:
When I click on any application which involves sound (i.e; Pianist, Drummer, Shaver, Guitarist, MxTube etc.) it just freezes for a few seconds then the application closes down so I end up back in the main menu.
Volume controls
This is weird but the volume control on the side of the iPhone... When I put the volume up or down, it does nothing at all. If I'm browsing the main menu, if I + or - the volume, it'll freeze what I'm doing for about 5 seconds then go back to normal but the adjustment of sound has not changed.
And the silent switch, normally when you press it as you know, an icon shows up saying whether it's on silent or not but it freezes for a few seconds and then carries on but no changes are made what so ever (just like the volume control!) Like if I turn the phone on by the top button, as you know, it asks to be unlocked. If I hit one of them volume buttons, the shiny font stops shining and freezes in motion for a few seconds.. This is how I know that it's the sound.
Settings > Sounds
This is really odd.... When I click the settings>sounds, it freezes for a few seconds then allows me to go into it but it should not freeze like it does... And the volume control on this menu is constantly on the lowest. When I try to amend the changes by moving the volume up as to increasing the volume, yet again it freezes for a while then moves up! I go back but there is still no sound which is bizarre! Thing is, when I go back into that menu again, it's back to the bottom again!
iPod/Videos
The play button on the iPod does not work and as many times as I press it, it will not play the song or will videos load up.
Phone calls
When I recieve a phone call, it rings but I can not hear that it is ringing. When I go to answer the call by sliding the answer box, it just freezes when the box gets to the end. I can not hear anyone on the phone and no-one can hear me on the phone. The phone is still frozen on the answer box as I just stated until the other person puts down the phone (which is another example of the sound stopping so it unfreezes)
I have not installed no applications recently so it can't be a fault with a dodgy application.
I have tried restarting the iPhone and powering it off...
Also, when I tried researching into this, I find loads of pages of people getting a problem with sound which doesn't seem to be my problem, but the problem is fixed by putting a headphone into the jack many times until it works.. this has not work. They say it's because there is dust on the jack...
Surely, if that was my problem, it would still play videos, songs, applications and not freeze like mine when there is anything to do with sound etc.
I don't really know what to do... I can't take it back to Apple as I brought it Jailbroken else where.
It's just weird for the fact that anything to do with the output of sound on my phone makes the phone freeze when there should be sound, it'll refuse to open anything which involves sound... it will not do anything or produce any form of sound at all. It even freezes when I put my passcode in for like 1 second because it's a sound...
I just don't get why it's doing this when I have done nothing to it. It's just anything to do with sound if you get me?
I'm not very good at explaining myself at all but I hope this will make sense to some people and there is a do-able fix for this. It's hard to explain when you have to explain it to them and they can not witness it.
Thank you so much. I'll provide more detail if needs be but this is my problem.

Couple questions for you:
Have you tried resetting? I.e. going to Settings > General > Reset All Settings?
Was there anything new / changed directly before you noticed the sound issue?

Thanks for replying Patrick,
Yes I have tried resetting all the setting through the general settings but it hasn't made a difference with this.
And nope, there were no changes to my iPhone before this had occured. I just picked it up and noticed it was not working at all.

Try plugging in a set of headphones/earbuds and then unplugging them. For some reason this often helps to get the sound back (it's worked for me before).

I have tried this trick but it still doesn't work after doing that either.
I feel like this is a different problem because that one just seems to be the loss of sound. Like I stated in thread introduction, the sound doesn't work and any output of sound which is supposed to take place within the phone does not produce. It just freezes the phone for a few seconds. Like menus, applications, the iPod etc.

Others may have more suggestions, but I think a Restore is next on the list to try, if you haven't already. Of course that means you'd have to re-jailbreak, unlock (if you are unlocked), make sure you have contacts, music, photos etc. synced to somewhere and all that fun stuff

I would say the same also. Restore to 1.1.4 and use ZiPhone to unlock it all again.
If that doesn't work, take it back to the store and throw it at them.

I was dreading not to go down this road but I guess that is my only option for now!
Now, I haven't got one clue about how to do this and I'm really scared I'm going to bugger this up...
Is it a hard process?
Can anyone link me to a step by step guide on how to do this or create one? Because I haven't got a clue where I would start and what I need to do.
Thank you in advance and sorry if I sound like a nub. I just haven't go a clue!

Restoring is a VERY simple process. I would do as patrick said and make sure that all of your contacts are saved in Outlook (or the application you sync your contacts from) and that your iTunes music is still in fact, in iTunes. From there you just plug the phone into the computer, open up iTunes, go to your iPhone tab, and hit restore. It is usually a pretty fast process and shouldn't take much time at all. Here is a step-by-step from the Apple site just in case.
