Apps disappearing anyone?

I have a first generation iPhone. Yesterday I did a normal sync on my computer and when I was in work today, I noticed I had about 10-15 apps missing from my screen. Yet if I go on iTunes, they are still on there. If I download them again, it gives me the message that I have already downloaded this application. Does anyone know why they aren't being imported from my iTunes to my iPhone?

in itunes under devices, you will see your phone
click it
go to the applications tab
check the apps you want on your phone, anything unchecked will not be on your phone after you sync

Thanks for the reply, but I wish it was that simple. I have all the preferences checked, as well as the apps checked for when I sync. That is why I am posting the question.
