New details about the iPhone

Posted Jun 23rd 2007 2:24PM by Ryan Block
Filed under: Cellphones, Features

Remember the winning Engadget commercial, "The Long Arm of Steve Jobs"? We posted it after the break, but finding someone who's spent some serious time with a pre-launch iPhone and getting them to talk is basically a lot like that. Still, we managed to smuggle out some freshly leaked details from a very trusted inside source who's been fooling around with a unit. Here's what they had to say:
  • The keyboard was simply described as "disappointing". Keyboarding with two thumbs often registers multiple key presses (two or three at a time) resulting in a lot of mistakes. The best way to type is with a single finger (as shown in most of Apple's demos), but two thumbs is supposedly very difficult. After trying it for a number of days our source gave up using their thumbs.
  • The text auto-correction only works well for simple words, but doesn't work for proper names. We can only assume this bit will get better with time as Apple fills out its predictive text dictionary.
  • "It won't replace a BlackBerry. It's not good for text input. It's just not a business product."
  • The touchscreen was said to, in general, require somewhat hard presses to register input, and needs some getting used to.
  • In addition to its dock, the iPhone comes packaged with a polishing cloth (the thing's supposedly a fingerprint magnet, no surprise) and the usual smallish power adapter.
  • The Bluetooth headset will debut in the $120 range, and will come with its own dock for charging both the phone and the headset. The headset will feature a miniature magnetic charging interface á la MagSafe.
Click on for more impressions on the headset, browser, YouTube, and more.

i don't know about you guys, but this is definitely making me nervous, considering i text probably more than i make calls. maybe this is true, maybe it's not. or maybe it just takes some time to get used to, but i am very nervous about the keyboard. now, i'm sure i will be able to tackle it after some usage, but it makes me really wonder how this device will do with people who aren't exactly tech savy. which is probably going to be a large portion the the iphone users.

can apple fix this in a firmware upgrade? possibly. if a lot of people are complaining the keyboard is almost unusable, then i'm sure something will be done, but how much can be done? i think i might wait until after launch at least to pick it up, so i can have some time to play around with it before i take the dive. i realy wanted to get this thing on launch day though!

though!
Yeah, i have no doubts that people are going to get used to it, some even powering through it. As for people not being tech savvy, I dont imagine it being an issue for just text entry, andm for heavy texter's one finger QWERTY MAY be faster that hitting a button 4 times to get S. WHo knows? and there will be tons of skill levels with this thing, I'm sure.
I would say don't be nervous, and I'd imagine that ATT's 30 day return policy is still good.

If you look at the design of the multitouch it wouldn't make sence that you have to press harder. Its a matter of registering the electrical charge our body has naturally. So unless I am completely off base, and I am sure people will tell me, that fact is false thus calling into question the rest of the article.

hopefully its not like my Magellen. It has touch controls and you really need to PRESS it pretty hard no fast typing there.
