Default Anyone else losing interest on the iphone?

I was 110% sure I was going to buy the iphone.

Then slowly, I am not sure anymore. My friend works in a media company that streams TV to phones, and he played with the iphone prototype, and he said the thing is HUGH!. I mean we all know the dimension, but now it really got me thinking am I really ready to carry such a hugh phone all the time? He said it is so big that all his coworkers looked at it and lost interest in it. It is basically about 20% longer than the current ipod, which is already not the smallest thing to put in jeans pocket.

Also, EDGE(2.5G) is SLOW. The only reason I want to buy IPHONE is for the internet capability. I am pretty happy with my phone now, sans the internet. I want something with full size internet browsing, so basically it is iphone or the helio ocean. I have always been GSM, so it is basically the iphone. But the more I think of it, the more I am not sure about the EDGE. I know it has WIFI, but I don't need iphone to surf web when I am in office, home, or whatever. When I need iphone to surf web (like commuting, on the street), usually it would mean no WIFI.

Also, my internet email of choice is gmail. It doesn't seem iphone would provide the gmail applet to access it easily. I know I can go online and check, but it is not as easy as a seperate app. With the 3rd party app support still unknown, we won't know for sure. And also, IM support. YM, ICQ, MSN, I need all those!

And funny thing is, helio ocean has ALL those. Search, full size browser, all IMs, most emails (gmail, yahoo, etc). If it wasn't so butt ugly compare to iphone, maybe i will get that instead!

Obviously a forum like this would mainly consists of fanatics that would totally support iphone. but even that, I am wondering if anyone is losing interest on the iphone.

I am now torn and i am not sure if i want to get it anymore. A side of me still crave it, but another side is not sure.

In a word, NO I am not losing interest in the iPhone. Everytime I watch the keynote my interest level skyrockets. If your interest is declining, watch the keynote again .

As far as the size, I don't think the iPhone is huge. In fact, my current phone (HTC Wizard/Q-Tek 9100) is almost the exactly the same length and width and considerably thicker. Since it fits fine in the front pocket of my jeans, I know the iPhone's size will be fine. If the screen was smaller, I don't think surfing would be as appealing so the IMO the iPhone is about as small as it can be.

Accessing Gmail on an iPhone will not be a problem. You will not have to check your email via the web browser. Gmail offers free POP3 access so once an iPhone is configured, email will show up in your inbox just as you would expect. The only advantage you get by going with Yahoo is free "push" email. Since gmail doesn't offer "push" email, you will have to set up the iPhone to check you gmail account every X minutes.

Cool

Hey there! You'll probably want to wait to cast final judgement until you've had a chance to play with it and see what other's reactions are.

My favorite phone of late has been the Sony Ericsson T610: bluetooth syncing and tethering with internet access. That internet was sloooow, about 9600 kbps. So, to me, EDGE will be a huge improvement. Latency is probably more important and unless you are downloading a lot of data it should definitely be fast enough for me. But I do hope it allows for tethering too. There are a lot of times I would be near WiFi and might not have a laptop with me so that's a huge bonus. Even better is if I can somehow do VOIP, which I think would be the killer app for this phone.

The iPhone is roughly the same size as the latest Treo Smartphone but half the thickness. It's smaller than the Palm Tungsten E2. It's smaller than a Blackberry and even thinner than the Pearl. So I guess it kinda depends on what you are comparing it to. These are the devices I would compare to. But I think the other features of the phone make the size a non-issue for me. I'd still get it if it were a little bigger.

Just like there are a lot of music players that do what the iPod does and more, they are not as cool looking, don't work as simply, and don't do iTunes. This, among other features, is why the iPhone will be successful and why I'm still 100% for it.

yeh exactly. the possibilities for this phone are too countless. wifi is one of the selling points on why i'm getting it. (Having an iPod and if-the-rumors-are-good-camera is another.)

I'm sure it will sync all your bookmarks to dot mac as well. How many times are you somewhere and someone tells you about a great url and you forget it (or they forget it to send it to you.) Just bookmark the site at their place on your phone, when you're synced back at home, it shows up.

Or you're on the road and you forgot directions... most hotels do free high-speed internet. just park outside a hotel on the way (or sit in the lobby) and get the relevant info. no need to whip out another device.

the more I think about it, the more ideas I get. others phones have similar functionality but Apple just puts it all together in such a nice package.

We all have our second thoughts on buying such an expensive and tech-savvy product. However, as everyone has said in this thread, just watch the keynote and you'll be back into it. This forum is also a great way to cure the second thoughts disease. In fact, I was doubting purchasing it before I watched the keynote again and joined this forum. Now I think about it a lot and can't wait.

The decision, however, is completely up to you. There are many good phones out there, this is just one of them. Not to say it is the best, but it certainly seems to have the most features of phones these days. Personal preference plays a huge role in this.

The Ocean from Helio is a very nice phone. I have seen it firsthand and it looked like a good phone relative to software and hardware. However, as you subtly noted (), it is not the most appealing phone to the senses.

iPhone may be a little big, but keep in mind that you are replacing the phone, iPod, and maybe even camera in your pocket/ bag with one device that is only slightly bigger than most smartphones. Plus, there are many that are even BIGGER.

Relative to the Gmail concern, Gmail has the capability to forward all of the new emails to another email address. This means, basically, that you could set it up to forward to your new Yahoo mail address and get all of the emails. This would push out to the iPhone, keeping you from having to access the mailbox via Safari. As for other email clients like AOL, I am still researching and have currently found no way to do what you can do with Gmail. If anybody knows, I would love to, too.

Thanks, and I hope this helps.

P.S. If you need to know how to do this auto- forwarding with Gmail, PM me and I can try to help.

ok a couple of things here...first off i have a nokia n80. it is a fantastic phone. however, it only supports europe's 3g coverage not the u.s so i have to browse the web using edge. while i would love 3g and can't wait till it becomes the norm, edge isn't that bad. people make it out to be worse than it really is.

secondly, please please do yourself a favor, if you opt to go with a phone other than the iphone, do not get a helio. a couple of things about phone browsers. the helio is far from the best. the nokia n series render web pages exactly how you see them on your computer and is currently the best web broswer out there. secondly you can put opera mobile on any windows based smartphone i believe( not opera mini) and that is also very good for surfing. and yes, i think the iphone will be better than all of these, and will own the best browser out there when it comes out.

i don't know, sometimes the 3g argument annoys me. while i'd love to have it, how much time do i really spend surfing the web on my phone? yes i use it quite frequently, but only for fairly short periods of time. but not to the extent that i would an my pc. that's what bothers me when people whine about the lack of 3g. seriously, how much time do you spend on the web on your phone? why not just get a freaking laptop?

i'm currently having a heavy debate between the n95 and the iphone myself. i will wait. i know what the n95 can do and it is a sick sick phone. what i don't know is how the iphone will perform. so i will reserve my judgement until it comes out so i can get a hands on with it. so my advice to you is wait and see. you know the thing is going to get hacked it's only a matter of time, so a lot of things you don't see on there initially, might end up being on there later on. would you buy a t.v. without researching it first? how about a car stereo? or a gps unit? probably not, and i would do the same thing here.

WAIT!! Ebrunn, don't say that!! I recommend that anyone losing interest in the iPhone has their free right to do so. Yeah, it's probably not going to be that great of a phone. Lots of weaknesses. Probably going to have lousy battery life. Yeah, and that thing you guys said about Yahoo mail...

Now, there will be MORE iPhones available for those of us who REALLY want one.

Then don't wear girl jeans.

If you must have G3 and all those IM programs with you wherever you go like a security blanket, go for it. More iPhones to go around for the rest of us.
