The university is issuing iPhones to all students as part of a new program that uses the full time data/internet connection as a means to get information, security alerts and instructional information to the students. I don't remember any of my schools ever doing something that advanced.
By the way, the HSBC ad on the forum page is a pain in the rear with it constantly popping open whenever the mouse gets near it. I hate those types of ads.
I remember hearing about a school doing this sometime last year, or maybe it was the same school but they're just now implementing it. I believe Liss (Kokogirl) posted the original story. I'll see if I can dig it up when I get home.
Now as far as the ads are concerned, thinking that Chris is trying to "earn money" by selling ads is rather childish. The reason Chris had to resort to ads was to keep the EIC forums free to the users. Do you really think that Chris would deliberately make people annoyed by using his site? If you go into the Off Topic subforum you can search for the original post he made about the ads and how he didn't want to use them but eventually had to resort to using ads.
I have no problem at all with the ads and even click on a few now and then just so he gets credit. The only problem I have with any of the ads is that one particular one from HSBC because it pops open randomly and most of the time it is just as I am selecting a forum to enter. Instead their site opens. I wouldnt have a problem with an add site popping up and requiring us to "skip this ad" to get into the forum, but when it forces you to keep closing it over and over again or having to click back to return here after it tricks you into going there, then I have a problem with it.

Hey Chris....you know I was kidding, right? I don't care about the ads and am glad that they pay for my EIC use.
I don't want anyone getting bent out of shape or anything (huhmuh!)
Sorry if that came off as a bit aggressive, I was in my Physics review and was quite annoyed at the time. I just wanted to make sure you weren't under the impression that Chris is running EIC as a "for profit" site. I haven't had direct experience with the ad you guys are talking about, but I believe Chris may have already taken care of it.
Also, I guess Lisa didn't post a similar story a while back, but I'll find it eventually.
