I'm still trying to figure out why they would release another version of iPhone v1 when the 3g v2 iPhone is imminent. Maybe sales have really stagnated and they are trying to lure in those people who are not buying with hopes of waiting for the v2 iphone.

What official word has been released stating that it's "imminent?" I've seen posts on a few of the gossip/rumor sites, and agree that it is likely going to happen sometime, but imminent? Don't you think they would have announced it at MacWorld if that was the case?

AT&T's CEO confirmed there would be a 3g iPhone this year. That's good enough for me.

Right...that's how it always seems to go. I just re-acquired the iPhone after a 3 month hiatus with the Tilt and N95-3. I bought mine last week and now the 16gb comes out. grrrrrr If i can switch and not pay the restock fee I'd do it, but I am sure they'd hit me for the restock.

Heh, well, considering Jobs said "late 2008" and the AT&T CEO just said 2008, I guess they have 10 months left. In cellphone years, 10 months does not equal "imminent."

I'm betting this release of the 16g iPhone is to tide over the faithful until December of 2008 when they release the 3G model.

Id assume before December. I agree they still have 10 months, but with them having confirmed it's coming, to me that's "imminent"

I'd think they would want it on shelves before "Black Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving) which is the busiest shopping day of the season.

Either way I believe I'm saying No to the 16gb unless i start filling up quickly with 3rd party apps once the SDK 3rd party apps hit.

No way would they have announced at MacWorld, IMO. Last year there was no iPhone, so after it was announced there was no risk of hurting current sales--indeed it probably hurt some of the iPhone's competition.

But this year the iPhone was already out. Any announcement, even if it were to come out in June, would have a chilling effect on current iPhone sales. Better for Apple to announce the 3G model when it's ready, or nearly ready, for shipment.

That said AFAIK Apple still has to get FCC approval, and as of the moment that hasn't happened yet. I assume they will try to wait until the last minute for that, in the hopes that it passes easily and to stop the rumor mills from spilling the proverbial beans.
